The Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Maldives, His Excellency Tung-Lai Margue made a courtesy call on the Chairman of Elections Commission of the Maldives, Mr. Ahmed Shareef this morning. During the meeting held at Election Commission, the Chairman and the Ambassador discussed and shared the concerns regarding the allegations and threats upheaved after declaring presidential Election 2018 result. Commission Chairman expressed his utmost distress over the false allegations and dismisses the “unsubstantiated allegations” and stressed that there were no official complaints that could affect the outcome which took place “in the presence of a record number of representatives of candidates, local and international observers and monitors.

He also added that the Elections Commission members are spending nights at undisclosed locations due to threats after the ruling party alleged fraud and vote rigging in the September 23rd presidential election. He also assured the Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Maldives, that Election Commission is ready for ballot papers to be examined in the presence of international experts along with a court order.

Shaken to hear these false allegations and threats regarding the presidential election 2018, one which has been internationally accepted as one of the most fair, credible and peaceful election held in Maldives,  His Excellency Tung-Lai Margue congratulated the Commission Chairman for upholding democratic values and norms in the whole election process.  He further extended the courtesy to provide expert assistance in the upcoming Parliamentary Election.  Election Commission welcomes International Communities assistance and guidance in restoring order and democracy in Maldives.

Hence, the meeting concluded focusing on ways to further strengthen and enhance the existing bilateral relations between the two countries, particularly in the field of conducting fair and impartial elections.
